If you draw around 9m or 8s, you can call for chow 3m, 2p, and 3s, or pong 1m or 1s.

If there is one more pairs in this hand, it is complicated because you should consider 7 pairs.

This theme was mentioned a bit in For Beginner 16.

If 3s is discarded, there will be three types of acceptances: 1 4 7m.

If you discard one of Manzu elements, you have a total of four accepted hands, two with Manzu and two with Souzu.

In flat conditions, waiting for 1 4 is easier to win than 4 7, so discard 5 6m.

Commentary 

The journal in which this paper was published, Frontiers of Neurology, is an open access journal, but it is an authoritative and well-known journal.

The impact factor (a number that indicates the importance of a journal) at the time of publication was 3.5, making it an important journal with high scientific credibility.

This paper is excellent in that it is an intervention study and assesses brain function over time by comparing people who played mahjong with those who did not (controls).

What is Executive Function??

Executive function is the advanced cognitive function for completing tasks and/or overcoming difficulties involving prefrontal cortex-mediated working memory and reflection, planning, organization, and management.　(from this paper)

If this function is impaired, we will not be able to plan and do things in order.

This is a core function of the so-called "higher brain functions".

Trail Making Test (TMT)

This is a very common method of testing for executive function disorders.

This is a test in which you have to trace a piece of paper with numbers and alphabets on it in one stroke without crossing the lines.

The shorter the time taken from start to finish, the better the executive function.

The longer it takes, the worse the executive functioning is.

The B in MoCA B stands for Beijin, which is the Mandarin version.

Abstract of Paper

We gathered 56 elderly people over the age of 65 and let 28 of them to play mahjong three days a week for one hour at a time for 12 weeks.

The remaining 28 patients were tested only (control).

The mahjong group (black circles) showed an increase in the MoCA (top left of the figure) score and a clear decrease in the time spent on TMT (top right of the figure).

This paper saids

「This finding may reflect the fact that playing mahjong is mentally and intellectually challenging. In order to win the game, participants need to concentrate as well as judge and predict the next moves of others in order to select the best strategies to win. Eye and hand movements are also required to play mahjong. All these activities may have mobilized cognitive reserves in the brain and thus enhanced executive function」.

Summary

The results of this study indicate that mahjong may have restored executive function once it was lost.

In the future, mahjong may be used to rehabilitate people with impaired executive functions due to head trauma.

This is the scene that no parents and a big hand is needed.

Both Three sequences and Straight are the same in terms of two roles. 

But there is a clear difference between them,

Whether it has the option of all simples.

Therefore, when you want a big hand, the basic rule is to aim for three colors sequences.

This is a form that I introduced once in For Beginner 8.

It is useful in the early and middle stages of the game, as it accepts 2 types of 8 tiles.

However, at the end of the game, you need to make the final form.

The final form is always the Ryan men (Double sided wait).

How can we wait for the "Ryan men"?

You should always be aware of the following.

In this hand, if you discard 4s, and take Ryan kan , the only change to Ryan men (double  sided) is only 3s.

But if you use the Souzu as the head, the Manzu can change to Ryan men.

If you discard the 8s, you can change this hand to Ryan men with 5m and 7m in addition to 3s.

Of course, if the triplet changes by drawing 6m or 4s, don't hesitate to call  Riich with 5 8p.

At first glance, it looks like you can discard either one.

It is likely to discard 4m, thinking that you can draw 8m for Triple sequences.

It is better to be prepared for drawing dora rather than to have a 50% probability of losing Triple sequences.

If you discard 4m and fix dora in the middle, you will have to discard the dora itself or discard  the dangerous 6p 7p when dora comes in the future.

If you discard 7m, you can discard South, which is comparatively safer, and also accept dora, which will turn into a hand where you can expect to get a Mangan(8000 points) at once.

Not only does it make the hand more expensive, but it also reduces the risk of dealing in with the dora to another player.

By keeping the dora at the end of the hand, you can always keep the dora in the hand.

You definitely must win this hand.

To make 5 blocks, you need to make 2 elements in Manzu(character), 1 element + head (or one more element) in pins(Dots), and 1 element (or head) in Sozu(Bamboo).

So you have to make 2 elements in Manzu.

If you discard 6m, this hand can accept 2m 3m 5m, 3 types 9 tiles.

If you discard ,  this hand can accept only 2m 5m, 2types 7 tiles.

Discarding 3m,  you can 2 elements by drawing 2m, 4m, 5m, and 7m, 4 types 12 tiles,

You should be able to consider this shape in your mind.

Calling Riich first in the early round is very strong regardless of the wait.

First , the win rate and the Deal-in rate  when the player goes for riichi in this situation are shown in red letters of the figure.

The reason for discarding 8p here is to make a double-sided hand.

In order to make a double-sided hand, you need to draw five types of hands: 5p, 3 4 6 7s.

The probability of drawing one specific type of mahjong tile is about 3%.

So, the probability of this hand turning into a double-sided hand is 3 x 5=15% per one round.

So, on average, it will take 6 to 7 rounds for this hand to turn into a double-sided hand.

In other words, you can expect to reach double-sided riichi in the 10th or 11th round on average.

Therefore, we have to compare the probability of double-sided = blue letters.

However, this is the case when you proceed alone.

Taking into account other players

During this time, on average, 1.2 players have already made ready hand, so you have to take into account the possibility of calling riichi following other players.

The following table shows the Win rate and Deal in rate at that time.

In other words, it is most reasonable to compare the red letters in the table above with the blue letters in the table below.

This shape is very common and is seen at least once every 4 half round.

This hand is still two before for ready when considered in the normal 5-blocks (4 elements + 1 head). 

Moreover, you have to call either the green dragon, which is a dora, or the East, which is a double wind.

Moreover, the wait is either Kan-Chan (gut-shot) or Shan-Pon (doble-pair wait) .

Considering the round, it would be very difficult to win.
