Now, what about 8 when there is 5?

If you think about it in the same way as in Q1 for bigginer, with 5, there is no loss in either 6 or 7, so the only disadvantage of cutting 8 is 9, which is not different from 1 where only 2 is a disadvantage.

Discard ⑧

As you can see, there is no difference in the number of tiles accepted.

What makes a difference is when you pick the tile next to it.

Discard ①

And you pick ② → If you don't pick ③, it doesn't become an element!

Discard ⑧

When you pick ⑦ → Either ⑥ or ⑨ will become an element!

As you can see, there is a clear difference when you look one more step ahead.

Therefore, here we discard  ① and leave ⑧.
